There is a common misconception that in order to be able to get to a point where you can truly end up maximizing the kind of musical output that you can manage to take part in over the course of your artistic career, you would definitely need to look into learning advanced music theory at any given point in time. The truth is that advanced music theory is actually not a requirement for you if you want to make good music in any way, shape or form, and indeed many great musicians that have existed throughout the years actually didn’t know a single thing about the theory behind the music that they might have been taking part in the creation of.

However, it is true to say that music theory can help you understand music better. A big part of the reason what that is the case has to do with the fact that when you are on Indy party buses and you listen to a particular piece of music,

your knowledge of theory will help you break apart what helps makes this music sound so good in the first place. It by no means guarantees that you will be able to make good music on your own, but you would at the very least have a clearer idea of the kind of effort that goes into making this sort of thing and you can pinpoint some of its qualities that would potentially end up mattering to you.

A lot of the great musical geniuses of the classical period focused much of their time to learning theory and advancing it as much as possible so you should try to do that too.
